How to air fry frozen fries

  1. 1

    Skip thawing

Add fries to the basket straight from the freezer — thawing first makes them soggy.

  2. 2

    Spread in a single layer

Avoid piling fries on top of each other so hot air can reach every piece.

  3. 3

    Air fry at 400°F (205°C)

Cook for 15–18 minutes total, depending on fry thickness.

  4. 4

    Shake twice

Shake the basket at the halfway point and again around three-quarters through for even browning.

  5. 5

    Check for crispness

Fries are ready when golden and firm, not pale or limp.

  6. 6

    Salt immediately

Salt the fries right when they come out, while the surface is still hot enough for it to stick.

Doneness and safety

Frozen fries are already fully cooked before freezing, so this step is about texture, not food safety. They're done when golden brown, firm, and crisp on the outside — a pale, floppy fry needs another few minutes.

Common frozen fries mistakes

  • Adding extra oil to already-oiled frozen fries, which makes them greasy and soggy instead of crisp.
  • Skipping the shake, leaving fries in the center of the basket underdone.
  • Overloading the basket in a thick pile, which blocks airflow to the fries underneath.
  • Thawing fries before cooking — they're designed to go in frozen, straight from the freezer.
  • Salting before cooking instead of right after, when the salt actually sticks to the surface.

Frozen Fries in the air fryer: questions

Real questions people ask about air frying frozen fries.

Do frozen fries need oil in the air fryer?

No. Frozen fries are pre-coated with oil during processing, so adding more usually just makes them greasy instead of crispier.

Why are my air fryer fries soggy?

Usually overcrowding — fries piled too deep block airflow and steam instead of crisp. Cook in a single layer, or in two batches if needed.

How many times should I shake the basket?

Twice: once at the halfway point and again around the three-quarter mark, so every side gets exposed to the hot air.

Can I stack frozen fries in the air fryer?

It's better not to. A single, even layer gives the crispiest result — stacked fries in the middle of a pile tend to stay pale and soft.
