About the overtime calculator

This calculator finds your overtime pay and total pay for a period from three numbers: your regular hourly rate, the hours you worked at that rate, and the extra hours you worked at an overtime rate. It's built around the most common overtime arrangement β€” a multiplier applied to your normal hourly rate, such as "time and a half" or "double time" β€” rather than any single country's specific labor law.

The calculation happens in three steps. First, your overtime hourly rate is your regular rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier β€” at time and a half, an $20/hour job becomes $30/hour for overtime hours. Second, your total overtime pay is that overtime rate multiplied by the number of overtime hours you worked. Third, your total pay for the period is simply your regular pay (rate Γ— regular hours) plus that overtime pay.

"Time and a half" is the most common overtime multiplier in the United States and several other countries β€” it means the employee earns 50% more than their standard wage for each overtime hour. "Double time," less common and usually reserved for holidays or especially long shifts, pays twice the standard rate. Some employers and union contracts use other multipliers entirely, so always check your own pay stub or employment contract for the exact rate that applies to you.

In the United States, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) generally requires overtime pay of at least time and a half for non-exempt employees who work more than 40 hours in a workweek. Whether a given employee is "exempt" from overtime rules depends on factors like salary level and job duties, not just job title β€” many salaried employees are still legally entitled to overtime pay. Rules vary significantly outside the US, so this calculator is meant as a general pay estimator rather than a legal reference for your specific jurisdiction.

This tool is useful for a quick sanity check on a paycheck, for estimating take-home pay before accepting extra shifts, or for employers doing quick payroll estimates. It doesn't account for tax withholding, benefits deductions, or other adjustments β€” the numbers shown are gross pay before any of that.

Overtime calculator questions

How overtime pay and multipliers work.

How is overtime pay calculated?

Multiply your regular hourly rate by your overtime multiplier (often 1.5 for time and a half) to get your overtime hourly rate, then multiply that by the number of overtime hours you worked.

What does "time and a half" mean?

It means you're paid 1.5 times your normal hourly rate for overtime hours β€” 50% more than your standard wage. An employee earning $20/hour would earn $30/hour for each overtime hour.

What is double time?

Double time pays twice your normal hourly rate for overtime hours. It's less common than time and a half and is usually reserved for holidays, particularly long shifts, or specific union agreements.

How many hours count as overtime?

This varies by country and employer, but in the US, non-exempt employees are generally entitled to overtime pay for hours worked beyond 40 in a single workweek, under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Are salaried employees entitled to overtime pay?

It depends on whether they're classified as "exempt" or "non-exempt" under labor law, which depends on salary level and job duties β€” not just job title. Many salaried workers are still legally entitled to overtime pay. Check your local labor law or HR department for your specific situation.

Does this calculator account for taxes?

No β€” the numbers shown are gross pay (before tax withholding and other deductions), which is what most overtime and pay-rate policies are based on.

Can overtime multipliers be different from 1.5x or 2x?

Yes. Some employers, industries, and union contracts use other multipliers, or pay overtime differently for weekends versus weekdays. Always check your pay stub or employment contract for your specific rate.
