About the BTU calculator

A BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating tells you how much heating or cooling capacity an air conditioner, heater, or portable unit can deliver per hour. This calculator uses a widely-cited sizing rule of thumb: multiply the room's square footage by a base BTU-per-square-foot figure that depends on how well insulated the space is and how much heat it's exposed to, then adjust for ceiling height.

The base multiplier is 20 BTU per square foot for a mild climate or well-insulated room, 25 for a moderate climate, and 30 for a hot climate or a poorly-insulated space with lots of windows or sun exposure. A standard room is assumed to have an 8-foot ceiling; taller ceilings hold more air volume and need proportionally more capacity, so the calculator scales the result by ceiling height divided by 8.

For example, a 300 square foot room in a moderate climate with a standard 8-foot ceiling comes out to 300 Γ— 25 Γ— (8/8) = 7,500 BTU. The same room with a 10-foot ceiling scales up to 300 Γ— 25 Γ— (10/8) = 9,375 BTU, since there's more air to heat or cool.

It's important to understand what this estimate leaves out. A real HVAC sizing calculation β€” what professionals call a Manual J load calculation β€” accounts for window count and orientation, insulation R-values, air leakage, local climate design temperatures, occupancy, and heat-generating appliances in far more detail than a single square-footage multiplier ever could. Two rooms of the same size in the same climate can have genuinely different real-world BTU needs depending on how many south-facing windows they have or how well-sealed the walls are.

Use this calculator to get a ballpark figure for shopping β€” for example, deciding whether you need an 8,000 BTU or 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner β€” but treat it as a starting point rather than a final answer. If you're sizing a whole-home HVAC system or making a purchase you can't easily return, a contractor's Manual J calculation will give you a far more precise number.
