About the grams to cups calculator

Converting grams to cups isn't as simple as converting length or weight units, because a cup is a measure of volume while a gram is a measure of mass β€” and how much a cup of something weighs depends entirely on what that something is. A cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of honey, even though both fill the same 240 ml cup, because flour is light and airy while honey is dense and heavy.

This calculator solves that by using ingredient-specific density values. Select the ingredient you're measuring β€” flour, sugar, butter, rice, and more β€” enter the weight in grams, and it divides by that ingredient's grams-per-cup figure to give you the equivalent volume in cups. The densities used here follow standard baking references, such as 120 g per cup for all-purpose flour and 200 g per cup for granulated sugar.

This conversion matters most for baking, where US recipes are usually written in cups and tablespoons while European and many international recipes use grams. Baking is also more sensitive to precise measurements than general cooking, since the ratio of flour to liquid to leavening affects texture directly β€” so getting the gram-to-cup conversion right for the specific ingredient you're using genuinely matters.

Keep in mind that how an ingredient is packed into the cup also affects its real-world weight β€” a "packed" cup of brown sugar weighs more than a loosely spooned one, and flour scooped straight from the bag packs down more than flour spooned into the cup and leveled off. The gram figures used here reflect standard preparation methods, but if precision matters for your recipe, a kitchen scale that measures directly in grams will always be more accurate than converting to cups.

Grams to cups questions

How the ingredient-specific conversion works.

How many grams are in a cup of flour?

About 120 grams for all-purpose flour that's spooned into the cup and leveled off. Flour scooped directly from the bag can pack down and weigh closer to 140-150 grams per cup.

How many grams are in a cup of sugar?

About 200 grams for granulated sugar. Brown sugar weighs more per cup when packed β€” about 220 grams β€” because the molasses content makes it denser.

How many grams are in a cup of butter?

About 227 grams, which is also why a standard US butter stick (113-114 g) is labeled as half a cup.

Why isn't there one grams-to-cups conversion for every ingredient?

A cup measures volume, not weight, so the number of grams in a cup depends on how dense the ingredient is. Light, airy ingredients like flour or oats weigh far less per cup than dense ones like honey or butter.

Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?

Almost β€” a US cup is 236.6 ml, while a metric cup (used in Australia and some other countries) is 250 ml. This calculator uses US cup measurements, which is the standard for most American recipes.

How accurate is converting grams to cups?

It's a good estimate for most home cooking, but for precise baking a kitchen scale measuring grams directly is always more accurate, since packing, humidity, and scooping technique can shift a cup measurement by 10-20%.
