About the roofing calculator

Roof "pitch" describes how steep a roof is, expressed as the rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches you move horizontally across the roof β€” roughly a 27-degree slope. The steeper the pitch, the more actual roof surface exists above a given footprint, because a steep roof covers the same ground-plan area with a longer, more angled surface.

The pitch multiplier used here comes straight from geometry: the sloped roof surface is the hypotenuse of a right triangle formed by the rise and the run. Multiplying the flat footprint area by sqrt(1 + (rise/12)Β²) converts a flat ground-plan measurement into the true sloped surface area β€” the same Pythagorean relationship you'd use to find the length of that hypotenuse, just applied to area instead of a single length.

A "roofing square" is 100 square feet, and it's the unit contractors and suppliers actually quote materials and labor in rather than raw square footage. The term dates back to how asphalt shingles were traditionally bundled and packaged, and it's stuck around as the standard trade unit β€” so when a roofer says a job is "20 squares," they mean 2,000 square feet of roof surface.

A waste factor gets added on top of the raw roof area because real roofs aren't cut with zero scrap. Hips, valleys, ridges, chimneys, skylights, and vents all create cuts and offcuts that can't be reused elsewhere, and the more complex the roofline, the more waste accumulates. A simple gable roof might only need 10% waste, while a roof with multiple hips, valleys, and dormers often needs 15% or more.

This calculator estimates roof surface from a single rectangular footprint, which works well for a simple gable or shed roof. Real roofs with dormers, multiple sections, or irregular shapes need to be broken into separate rectangular sections and summed individually, and hip or valley roofs typically need extra length allowances for the hip and valley rafters themselves that a simple footprint-times-multiplier calculation doesn't capture.
