About the salary calculator

This calculator converts pay between hourly, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and annual figures, so you can quickly compare a job offer quoted as an hourly rate against one quoted as an annual salary, or figure out what your current pay actually works out to on a different schedule. Enter either an hourly rate or an annual salary, along with how many hours you typically work per week and how many weeks you work per year, and every other figure is calculated from there.

The core relationship is straightforward: weekly pay equals your hourly rate multiplied by hours worked per week, and annual pay equals weekly pay multiplied by the number of weeks you work in a year. From annual pay, monthly is simply annual divided by 12, and bi-weekly is just double the weekly figure. If you start from an annual salary instead, the calculator works backward β€” dividing by total yearly hours (hours per week times weeks per year) to find the equivalent hourly rate.

The default assumption is 40 hours per week and 52 weeks per year, which represents a standard full-time schedule with no unpaid time off. If you take unpaid vacation, unpaid leave, or work fewer weeks per year for any other reason, lower the "weeks per year" figure to get a more accurate hourly-to-annual conversion β€” for example, two weeks of unpaid time off would mean using 50 weeks instead of 52.

It's important to understand what this calculator is not: it is not a take-home pay or paycheck calculator. Every figure shown is gross pay β€” the amount earned before income tax, payroll tax (like Social Security and Medicare in the US), health insurance premiums, retirement contributions, or any other deduction. Your actual deposited paycheck will be meaningfully lower than these numbers, often by 20–35% or more depending on your tax bracket, location, and benefit elections.

This tool is useful for comparing job offers presented in different pay formats, budgeting based on an expected raise, or simply understanding what a posted hourly wage or annual salary translates to on a different timescale. For an actual take-home pay estimate, you'll need a payroll or tax calculator that accounts for your specific deductions, filing status, and location.

Salary calculator questions

How pay conversions work, and what this calculator doesn't include.

How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply that by the number of weeks you work per year. At $20/hour, 40 hours/week, and 52 weeks/year, that's $41,600 per year.

How do I convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by your total working hours per year (hours per week multiplied by weeks per year). A $50,000 salary at 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year works out to about $24.04/hour.

Is this gross pay or take-home pay?

This is a gross, pre-tax estimate only. It does not account for income tax, payroll taxes, health insurance, retirement contributions, or any other deductions β€” actual take-home pay depends on your specific deductions, benefits, and local tax law.

What does bi-weekly pay mean?

Bi-weekly pay means being paid every two weeks, which works out to 26 pay periods in a typical year β€” different from semi-monthly pay, which is twice a month (24 pay periods a year) and results in a slightly different per-paycheck amount.

Why would I lower the "weeks per year" number?

If you take unpaid time off, work a seasonal job, or don't work a full 52-week year for any reason, lowering this number gives a more accurate annual estimate based on your actual working weeks.

Does this account for overtime pay?

No β€” this calculator assumes a consistent number of hours at a single rate. If you regularly work overtime, use a dedicated overtime pay calculator to add that on top of your regular pay.

How many work hours are in a typical year?

A standard full-time schedule of 40 hours per week for 52 weeks comes to 2,080 hours per year, which is the most common baseline used to convert between hourly and annual pay.
