About this sales tax calculator

Sales tax math has two directions, and this calculator handles both. In the default forward mode, you enter a pre-tax price and a tax rate, and the calculator adds tax on top using tax = price Γ— (rate Γ· 100), then total = price + tax. In reverse mode, you enter a total price that already includes tax β€” like the amount on a receipt β€” and the calculator backs out how much of that total was tax using pretax = total Γ· (1 + rate Γ· 100).

The reverse calculation is the one people get wrong most often, because it's tempting to just multiply the total by the tax rate and subtract β€” but that overstates the tax. Dividing by (1 + rate Γ· 100) first removes the tax correctly, since the tax rate percentage in the original math was calculated against the pre-tax price, not the total.

Sales tax in the United States isn't a single national rate β€” it's set at the state level, and most states also allow counties and cities to add their own local sales tax on top of the state rate. That means the effective combined rate can vary significantly even within the same state; two neighboring cities can have noticeably different total sales tax rates on the same purchase.

Five states β€” Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska β€” don't charge a statewide sales tax at all (Alaska allows local municipalities to levy their own sales taxes, so some purchases there are still taxed). This calculator's reference table shows a handful of illustrative state rates, but always check your specific city or county's combined rate for an exact number.

This tool calculates tax based on the state (or combined) rate you enter yourself β€” it doesn't look up your location automatically and doesn't account for product-specific exemptions, which many states apply to groceries, prescription medication, or clothing. For an exact tax amount on a real purchase, check your state and local tax authority's current combined rate and any applicable exemptions.

Sales tax calculator questions

How to add or remove sales tax, and how state rates vary.

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal: tax = price Γ— (rate Γ· 100). Then add that to the price to get the total. For example, a $50 item at 7% sales tax has $3.50 in tax, for a total of $53.50.

How do I calculate the price before tax from a total that includes tax?

Divide the total price by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal: pretax = total Γ· (1 + rate Γ· 100). Switch this calculator to reverse mode ("price already includes tax") to do this automatically.

Which US states have no sales tax?

Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska have no statewide sales tax. Alaska does allow local municipalities to charge their own sales tax, so some purchases there are still taxed at the local level.

Does this calculator include local sales tax?

Only if you enter a combined rate yourself. Sales tax rates shown for reference (like California's 7.25%) are state-level rates β€” most states let counties and cities add local surtax on top, so your actual combined rate at checkout can be higher. Enter your full combined rate for an accurate result.

What is the difference between adding and removing sales tax?

Adding tax (forward mode) starts from a pre-tax price and calculates tax on top of it. Removing tax (reverse mode) starts from a total price that already includes tax and works backward to find the original pre-tax price β€” these use different formulas and give different results if you use the wrong one.

Are groceries and clothing taxed the same as other items?

Not always. Many states exempt groceries, prescription medication, or clothing from sales tax, or tax them at a reduced rate. This calculator applies the single rate you enter uniformly and doesn't account for item-specific exemptions.
