About the shoe size converter

Unlike most calculators on this site, shoe sizing isn't derived from a single mathematical formula β€” it's standards-based. The US, UK, EU, and centimeter (mondopoint) sizing systems each grew out of different historical measuring conventions in different countries, so converting between them relies on published industry size charts rather than a formula you can compute from scratch. This tool looks up the standard published conversions directly rather than calculating them.

One thing that surprises people: men's and women's US sizing differ by roughly 1.5 sizes for the same physical foot length. A women's US size 8.5 corresponds to close to the same foot length as a men's US size 7. This offset is a historical and marketing convention carried over from how shoe sizing systems developed separately for men's and women's footwear, not a reflection of anatomical differences in foot shape.

The EU sizing system is often called the "Paris point" system, and it has a more mathematical basis than US or UK sizing: each EU size step corresponds to 2/3 of a centimeter (about 6.67mm) of the shoe's internal last length. That's why EU sizes climb in fairly regular increments of 0.5, while the US and UK columns increase by less consistent-looking amounts β€” they're measuring the same physical growth in foot length, just in different-sized steps.

Even with standardized charts, sizing still varies by brand and shoe style. A size chart is a manufacturer's guideline, not a physical law β€” running shoes, dress shoes, and boots from different brands can fit differently at the exact same labeled size due to differences in last shape, materials, and intended fit. Treat the conversions here as a reliable starting point for browsing sizes across regions, not a substitute for checking a specific brand's own size chart or trying shoes on.

If you want the most reliable comparison across brands, the centimeter column is usually your best bet. Foot length in centimeters is a direct physical measurement, so matching your actual measured foot length to the cm column tends to be more consistent than matching by US, UK, or EU size number alone, especially when shopping from a brand or region you haven't bought from before.

Shoe size converter questions

How US, UK, EU, and centimeter shoe sizes relate.

How do I convert US shoe size to EU?

Use the standard published conversion table rather than a formula β€” for example, a men's US size 9 is an EU size 42.5, and a women's US size 8 is an EU size 38.5. This converter looks up the exact published value for you.

How do I convert US shoe size to UK?

UK sizes are generally about 1 to 1.5 sizes lower than US sizes for men, and about 2.5 to 3 sizes lower for women. For example, a men's US size 10 is a UK size 9, and a women's US size 8 is a UK size 5.5.

What US size is a women's size 8?

A women's US size 8 corresponds to a UK size 5.5, an EU size 38.5, and about 24.1 cm in foot length, based on standard published women's sizing charts.

Why do men's and women's shoe sizes differ?

For the same physical foot length, women's US sizing runs about 1.5 sizes higher in number than men's US sizing. This is a historical and marketing convention in how the two size scales were developed, not a difference in anatomy.

How do I find my shoe size in centimeters?

Measure your foot length from heel to the tip of your longest toe in centimeters, then match that measurement to the closest value in the cm column of the size chart for your gender.

Are shoe size conversions exact across all brands?

No. Published size charts are a manufacturer's guideline, and fit can vary between brands and shoe styles even at the same labeled size. Use these conversions as a reliable starting point, and check a specific brand's own size chart when possible.
