About the square footage calculator

Square footage is simply the area of a space, measured in square feet, and for any room shaped like a rectangle it's found with one formula: length multiplied by width. Measure the two walls that meet at a corner, multiply the numbers together, and the result is your area β€” no need for anything more complicated for a typical bedroom, living room, or office.

This calculator accepts measurements in either feet or meters, since flooring, paint, and furniture are sometimes sold by the square foot and sometimes by the square meter depending on where you're shopping. Rather than making you convert by hand, it calculates the area once and displays it in both units side by side, using the exact conversion factor of 1 square foot = 0.09290304 square meters.

Square footage calculations come up constantly around the home: estimating how much flooring, carpet, or tile to order, figuring out paint coverage for a wall, comparing room sizes when apartment hunting, or checking whether furniture will actually fit. Most material calculators and cost estimates start from this same length-times-width number, so getting it right up front saves rework later.

Real rooms aren't always perfect rectangles β€” closets, bay windows, and L-shaped layouts are common. For those, the usual approach is to split the space into two or more rectangular sections, calculate each one separately with this tool, and add the results together to get the total square footage for the whole room.

Keep in mind that square footage measures floor area, not volume, so it doesn't account for ceiling height. It's also worth measuring at floor level with a tape measure or laser measure for the most accurate result, since walls are rarely perfectly straight or perfectly square in older homes.

Square footage calculator questions

How to measure and calculate room area.

How do I calculate square footage?

Multiply the length of the room by its width, both measured in feet. For example, a 10 ft by 12 ft room is 10 Γ— 12 = 120 square feet.

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply the square footage by 0.09290304. For example, 120 square feet equals about 11.15 square meters. This calculator does the conversion automatically alongside the square footage.

How do I calculate square footage for an L-shaped room?

Split the room into two rectangular sections, calculate the square footage of each one separately, then add the two results together for the total area.

How many square feet is a typical bedroom?

A typical bedroom ranges from about 100 to 200 square feet β€” for example, a 10x10 room is 100 sq ft and a 12x15 room is 180 sq ft. Larger primary bedrooms can run 200 square feet or more.

Does square footage include closets?

It depends on convention β€” for flooring and paint estimates, most people include closet floor area since it still needs to be covered. For real estate listings, local standards vary on whether closets count toward livable square footage.

How much flooring do I need for my square footage?

Order slightly more than your exact square footage β€” typically 5–10% extra β€” to account for cuts, waste, and pattern matching, especially for tile or hardwood.

What's the difference between square footage and square meters?

They're both units of area, just on different measurement systems. Square footage uses feet (common in the US), while square meters use the metric system (common in most other countries). 1 square meter is about 10.76 square feet.

Can I calculate square footage from meters instead of feet?

Yes β€” switch the unit toggle to Meters, enter your length and width in meters, and the calculator will show the area in both square meters and square feet.
