About the GPA calculator

This calculator finds your cumulative grade point average (GPA) from a list of courses, each with a letter grade and a number of credit hours. It's different from a simple grade calculator that averages assignment scores into one percentage β€” this tool works at the course level, combining an entire term's or degree's worth of classes into a single GPA figure on the standard 4.0-point scale (with a 4.3 ceiling for A+ grades, as used by many US institutions).

The calculation is a credit-weighted average, not a plain average of your letter grades. Each letter grade converts to a fixed number of GPA points (an A is 4.0, a B+ is 3.3, and so on down to an F at 0.0), and each course's contribution to your overall GPA is scaled by how many credit hours it's worth. A 4-credit course with an A affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course with the same A, which matches how most colleges and universities actually calculate GPA.

The formula is: multiply each course's GPA points by its credit hours, add all of those products together, then divide by the total number of credit hours across all courses. This is why a single low grade in a heavy course (like a 4-credit lab science) can pull your GPA down more than the same grade in a 1-credit seminar β€” credit hours act as a weight on every course's impact.

Because this calculator lets you add or remove course rows freely, it works equally well for a single semester's GPA or a full multi-year cumulative GPA β€” just enter every course and its credit hours for whichever period you want to calculate. Many students use it to check their transcript's official GPA calculation, to see how a hypothetical upcoming semester's grades would affect their cumulative average, or to figure out what grades they'd need going forward to reach a target GPA.

Keep in mind that exact GPA scales vary between institutions β€” some schools cap all A grades at 4.0 with no A+ bonus, others use a 4.3 or even 5.0 scale for honors and AP courses, and some don't award plus/minus grades at all. This calculator uses a common 4.3-point scale as a general-purpose default; always check your own school's official grading policy if your calculated GPA needs to match a transcript exactly.

Letter grade to GPA points

What each letter grade is worth on the standard 4.0 GPA scale.

By letter grade

A+ = 4.3 GPAA = 4.0 GPAA- = 3.7 GPAB+ = 3.3 GPAB = 3.0 GPAB- = 2.7 GPAC+ = 2.3 GPAC = 2.0 GPAC- = 1.7 GPAD+ = 1.3 GPAD = 1.0 GPAD- = 0.7 GPAF = 0.0 GPA

GPA calculator questions

How cumulative GPA and credit weighting work.

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's GPA points (based on its letter grade) by its credit hours, add those together across all your courses, then divide by the total credit hours. This gives a credit-weighted average, not a plain average of your letter grades.

What is a 4.0 GPA scale?

It's a standard scale where an A is worth 4.0 points, with lower letter grades worth progressively fewer points down to 0.0 for an F. Many schools also award 4.3 for an A+, and use fractional values like 3.7 or 3.3 for grades with a plus or minus.

Why does a 4-credit course affect my GPA more than a 2-credit course?

Because GPA is credit-weighted β€” each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours before being averaged, so courses worth more credits have a proportionally larger impact on your overall GPA.

What's the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA only includes courses from a single term, while cumulative GPA includes every course you've taken across all terms. You can calculate either one here β€” just enter the specific set of courses you want included.

Does this GPA calculator match my school's official GPA?

It should be very close if your school uses a standard 4.3-point scale, but some schools cap all A grades at 4.0, use different scales for honors courses, or don't award plus/minus grades β€” check your school's official policy for an exact match.

What GPA points does an A- earn?

On the standard scale used here, an A- is worth 3.7 GPA points, between a B+ at 3.3 and a straight A at 4.0.

Can I use this to calculate GPA for a single course?

Yes β€” just enter one course with its letter grade and credit hours, and the calculated GPA will simply equal that course's GPA points.

How many courses can I add?

You can add as many course rows as you need, whether you're calculating a single semester or your entire academic record, and remove any row you no longer need.
