The calculation is a credit-weighted average, not a plain average of your letter grades. Each letter grade converts to a fixed number of GPA points (an A is 4.0, a B+ is 3.3, and so on down to an F at 0.0), and each course's contribution to your overall GPA is scaled by how many credit hours it's worth. A 4-credit course with an A affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course with the same A, which matches how most colleges and universities actually calculate GPA.
The formula is: multiply each course's GPA points by its credit hours, add all of those products together, then divide by the total number of credit hours across all courses.
